You know what I find interesting? That we have so many deterrents, punishments and preventative measures to combat killing and death but none in regards to creating life. We revere and preserve life with such unrelenting opposition that we even debate and shun the use of euthanasia without exception. So now we find ourselves in a world where terminal patients in hospitals can do nothing but wait and suffer until their last day arrives yet people like Rajo Devi at the ripe old age of 70 are permitted to reproduce. Like with all the issues surrounding the morality and ethics of abortion, the problem I find is that people don't believe there are any negative connotations to life. I believe there should definitely be more emphasis on the detriments of introducing new life. There should be laws that prevent people like Devi from having children. Septuagenarians could not possibly possess the resources required for good parenting. It is astonishing to me the level of delusional selfishness it must take to bring a life into this world when it's pretty much your time to leave. I don't see a babies as cute little fleshy packages of life, hope and wonder. All I see is time, money and responsibility. How can anybody be pro-life if any one of those things are in question? Unless you are personally willing to take home a ownerless child then it is as good as dead to me. Forcing persistence of life regardless of circumstances is illogical. Unborn and otherwise aborted children become orphans and statistically unproductive or destructive members of society. Dying patients become emotional and financial burdens. Life is not what occurs between heartbeats but rather should be qualified by the day to day. If we really did revere life, we would only allow it to exist in the best of terms but we don't. Even heartless and mindless bacteria multiply only if the conditions are right. Why is it then that we allow teenagers, poverty-stricken couples and couples on the brink of death to reproduce? Although I realize it would be ambitious to suggest that all unqualified individuals should refrain from bumping uglies, there should be more focus on these issues. I believe this is a very conceivable future. In the future, people will cease to reproduce the conventional way and will instead choose ectogenesis, gestation outside the body. Not only will this process finally relieve females of their child-bearing responsibilities and offer them the freedom that accompanies it, it will greatly reduce birth defect rates and improve overall health. Potential parents vying for ectogenic babies will have to pass screening tests to ensure a good upbringing. Humans are way beyond just reproducing for the sake of propagating the species. I believe in an age of depleting resources and overpopulation our goal should focus more on improving the overall quality of life and not just defending it.

i agree entirely with this post.
you often wonder why people are so insistence on protecting life when it's not even their choice or up to them to continue to preserve in a meaningful way the life that is ready to be ended (e.g., euthanasia, abortion)
is it the fact that we as humans project our fear of death, especially involuntary death, onto others?
or is it the innate primal need for us as animals to procreate for quantity or quality?
will we evolved to a stage in humanities that it is solely about the quality? if so then a finely has to be drawn for quality of life vs. hitler-esque philosophies
it's so freaky..you always, ALWAYS blog about what i wanted to blog about...but...i have another view.
smell you later on my blog.
lynn: yes, there will probably be a lot of debate on what constitutes for good parenting households but will be necessary. In a world where custom-babies are possible, there must be ground rules that promote diversity so that there aren't any Hitler-esque things going on.
eudora: maybe next time i'll blog about something entirely random and see if we're still on the same wavelength.
You greatly overestimate the ability of any social institution to accurately judge. It takes time AND talent.. it's like communism. It would only work in conditions that will never exist.
Thanks.
